How to Choose a Photo for the Gift You Actually Want to Make

A photo can be meaningful and still need a different crop for a particular gift. Choose the product and the role of the image first: a print reproduces a photograph, a portrait uses it as a reference, and a comic also needs the story behind the people. Then assess the file you actually have.

Find the original before trying to improve a copy

Look for the original camera or phone file, rather than a screenshot of it or a version downloaded from a social feed. Use different checks for puzzles and collages

For a 300-piece photo puzzle, look for distinguishable areas across the image as well as a clear main subject. A broad, uniform background offers different visual clues from varied objects and colors; this does not establish a completion time. For a collage poster, choose a main image and supporting pictures. A large collection is not automatically a stronger layout if every face becomes small. Keep captions separate from the image files until the selected layout is clear.

Treat book photographs as references with a purpose
